A Life of Aging

What is old and what is aging and what is life.

Humans begin to age at the moment of conception and we spend our entire lives going through the aging process.

Moment, after moment, after moment, your mind and body morphs into something new and different right down to the molecule that you were in the beginning.

As each second ticks, cells age and new ones grow that will quickly become old.

Aging is a constant fact and it can’t be stopped until the body can age no longer.

So the challenge is in the defining of aging in the first place.

The way I see it, aging is living because when aging stops, living stops also.

This poem is for my friend Rhonda (not her real name). Rhonda was so worried about getting old, that she forgot to enjoy her life. She spent her days exercising, trying to eat all the right foods, finding the miracle serum that would erase her wrinkles and the magic pill that would allow her to live forever. From our long talks over wine, we realized that a life begins to age at the moment of conception. We should celebrate each second after that as a gift. If we are allowed to reach a ripe old age, that is the most wonderful of miracles itself. So we decided, not to allow anyone to make us stress about aging because we have been doing it our entire existence. Aging is part of living from the youngest to the oldest, we are all experiencing aging. I choose to celebrate instead of mourn.
